If they eat 100 pounds of feed a year, about what do I need to give them per day? Is it possible to overfeed them?

At the parks around me, Canadian Geese poise a serious health risk because of their droppings. I let my chickens roam the yard during the day. Should I be concerned about letting children run about barefoot in the yard?

i let mine run the yard all day ,they return themselves to the cooupe faithfully at dusk then i close the door repeat the next day .the droppings seem to do my grass and gardens wonders!size i guess is a factor i have a 2 acre lot so there don,t seem to be a problem the rain seems to break it down quickly.barefoot?never thought barefoot was a good idea anyway ,theres more dangers from cuts ,splinters nails glass etc any of which can cause an infection

Chickens can be both incredibly tough and fragile at the same time. From what you said, I think your chicken has been injured by an animal, dog or other, or by other chickens. Chickens can be incredibly mean especially if they see a vulnerability in one of the flock. They will peck and peck until one of them dies. I have a friend who had a pet chicken and the other hens pecked at her foot until it finally dried up and fell off. They strapped on an old fashioned clothes pin and off she went. Tap, hop, tap, hop until it wore down and they gave her a new one. It didn't seem to bother her. She lived for a long time. It's hard to find an injury on a bird because of all the feathers and the skinny little joints and bones. If she is injured, she might heal with a limp but she will always be a target for the others. Keep her warm and fed and she might make it. Good luck. I love chickens.

My neighbor had some chickens and ultimately they got loose. The whole neighborhood was inundated with chickens. The chickens found a home in my back yard and roosted in the big evergreen tree next door. In the beginning I loved them. After awhile, they became overwhelming. One day, one of the roosters left and came back a couple of days later with 6 hens that he stole from around the block. They took up residence in the evergreen in my backyard. I began building nesting boxes for them and they produced eggs. Delicious eggs. One day I saw a hen with 17 chicks coming through the car port. I really loved them. some of the chicks (red banty's I think) had green feet. Eventually they produced white chickens with green feet. One of my crappy neighbors shot or poisioned the whole flock. I have been so missing my chicken ever since. Chickens are so funny and loveable. I even tamed some of the roosters to lie on their backs in my arms and go to sleep. I really, really miss my chickens. Any suggestions?

Have you read the "Chicks 101 -Watch Them Grow" page on this site? I have also found http://www.the-coop.org/cgi-bin/UBB/ultimatebb.cgi to be a really useful site. Good luck.... they'll grow fast soon!

I've always been a bird person, though I started off with parrots and parakeets. That was back when I lived in an apartment in New York City. Actually, I once did have a chicken briefly, when I lived in Brooklyn, but Brooklyn isn't a good place to keep chicks and my bedroom started to stink really bad, so I had to give it away. In any event, I'm now living all the way around the world in Tasmania, and I have a house, and a yard and a good friend had tons of chickens (or chooks as they're called downunder), so I thought, wow, I could so get into that, Particularly cause I have had no parrots since I've moved here.
Two isa browns later (great, great pets, and so tame), I'm eating lots of great eggs, having fun with the chooks and the dogs, and waiting for a pet silkie that my friend promised me (she's hatched a few). Later on, I might try breeding, but not yet.
I'm enjoying my chickens immensely, as they are.

I've heard the best prevention for cannibalism is to keep the hens from getting bored -- let them out to scratch around in the garden, or hang greens (or other food) from a string in their pen so that it's like a game for them to get at the hanging treats.

Ever since I started raising chickens, I haven't been able to eat it in any form. I'm shocked that people are able to raise them as pets and friends until the family comes over for the holidays and they serve them up as dinner.
